Mental Health Transformation
Transforming conversations. Changing how Africa understands mental health.

Who We Are

Founded in 2022 by a young person with lived experience of untreated adolescent mental health challenges, MHT was created to ensure no young person navigates emotional distress alone.

Across Africa, 90% of youth with mental health needs receive no care. This isn't just a lack of services; it’s a literacy gap. We exist to give young people the language to recognise distress, name their experience, and seek help early.

Mission

To educate, advocate for, and support young people in matters of mental health through evidence-based programmes, accessible resources, and inclusive initiatives.

Vision

A world where mental health is prioritised, understood, and supported, empowering young people to thrive in their emotional well-being and lead fulfilling lives.

Our Approach

Our model is grounded in three principles:

Youth-Led

Young people are not just beneficiaries; they are designers, facilitators, and leaders of our work.

Prevention-Focused

We prioritise early knowledge, emotional skills, and safe help-seeking pathways before a crisis escalates.

Community-Based

We embed mental health literacy where young people already gather: classrooms, campuses, and community groups.

This allows mental health to become part of everyday life, not something discussed only in emergencies.

Our Theory of Change

If young people gain practical mental health knowledge, and teachers are equipped to respond safely, and peer-led spaces normalise help-seeking,

Then stigma decreases, early support increases, and emotional crises are prevented.

This leads to:
• safer learning environments
• healthier youth development
• stronger peer support networks
• reduced long-term mental health burden

We move from silence to literacy.
From crisis to prevention.
From fear to support.

Our Values

Our work is not just defined by what we do, but by the convictions that drive us. At Mental Health Transformation, these six values are our foundation:

  • Lived Experience: Our solutions are shaped by real stories. We believe those who have navigated the challenges of mental health are the most powerful advocates and guides for change.

  • Youth Leadership: Young people are not just the beneficiaries of our work; they are the designers, facilitators, and leaders of it. We believe in the power of youth-led expertise to transform communities.

  • Dignity Above All: We offer a space of no shame and no judgement. We believe every young person deserves to understand their mind and seek support with their dignity fully intact.

  • Evidence-Driven: We are committed to what works. Our programmes are grounded in data and global evidence, carefully adapted to resonate with the cultural realities of Nigeria and Africa.

  • Radical Equity: Mental health literacy is a right, not a privilege. We intentionally work to reach those most often excluded from support systems, ensuring no one is left behind.

  • Collaboration: We don't work in isolation. We build alongside schools, communities, and families to create a sustainable ecosystem of support that lasts long after we leave.

Meet the Team

We are a collective of young leaders, mental health advocates, and professionals dedicated to changing the narrative across Africa. Guided by lived experience and professional expertise, our team works on the front lines of school and community engagement.
